Summary

Black Mirror meets What If It’s Us in this gripping, romantic, and wildly surprising novel about two boys lost in space trying to find their way home—while falling in love—from the critically acclaimed author of We Are the Ants

When Noa closes his eyes on Earth and wakes up on a spaceship called Qriosity just as it’s about to explode, he’s pretty sure things can’t get much weirder。

Boy is he wrong。

Trapped aboard Qriosity are also DJ and Jenny, neither of whom remember how they got onboard the ship。 Together, the three face all the dangers of space, along with murder, aliens, a school dance, and one really, really bad day。 But none of this can prepare Noa for the biggest challenge—falling in love。 And as Noa’s feelings for DJ deepen, he has to contend not just with the challenges of the present, but also with his memories of the past。

However, nothing is what it seems on Qriosity, and the truth will upend all of their lives forever。

Love is complicated enough without also trying to stay alive。

I will say this was a fun romp in outer space, however, without giving away spoilers, I figured it out in the first third of the book。 Noa was a kick, DJ was a bit of a simp, which I guess goes with the storyline, which I won’t spoil。 Jenny was my favorite, no filter, balls out kick ass female。 I believe this can be put into the hands of a HS who likes this type of genre。 Can be genrefied as either Humor or Sci-Fi, depending upon how you look at it。

Sadly dnf。 I'm sure the plot was good (i read through the ending and it's actually pretty decent) but I can't stand Noa。 Really not a fan of annoying whiny protagonists who pity themselves。 Sad because I do like gay and I know I probably would've liked the plot。 Sadly dnf。 I'm sure the plot was good (i read through the ending and it's actually pretty decent) but I can't stand Noa。 Really not a fan of annoying whiny protagonists who pity themselves。 Sad because I do like gay and I know I probably would've liked the plot。 。。。more

I haven’t felt this way about a SDH book since We Are The Ants and I loved every page。

Fantastic。 Fleshed out characters。 Plenty of twists。 Pure originality: never read anything like this。 Romantic complications while hovering on a space ship? Plus drama and other 'issues' that confront them。 Genuinely a terrific read。 Just what I needed! I had a lot of thoughts and emotions reading this book, though less because of the characters in the book and more because of the book itself。The writing was ok。 Not the best, not the worst- not the style that I particularly like but it didn't get in the way of my immersion。 But I thought that the beginning of the book was sooooo slow。 It did open up to a high-stakes scene, but everything after the immediate danger was quite boring to me。 I really almost dnf'd! Mostly because I really disliked Noa as a character。 However, the second half of the book really picked up and I found myself enjoying it! Noa started being a semi-decent protagonist (though DJ and Jenny were still kinda meh), and because of this the plot really picked up。In saying that, this book has so many twists and turns it made me a little bit dizzy。 They didn't come out of nowhere though- they were foreshadowed just enough that they weren't completely out of the blue, but it was still satisfying when they were revealed。 I think they were wrapped up quite well at the end, too- you do guess at a few things, but I didn't think it was an annoying or disappointing ending。The main criticism I have about the book is that it didn't really seem to know what kind of angle it wanted to come from。 I feel like it was a plot-focussed book trying very hard to be a character-focussed book, but it was somewhere down the middle, giving neither their 'moment in the spotlight', so to speak。 The book centred around the characters and their relationships, but everything was so plot-heavy that I don't think they actually got time to develop to the depth they were said to be at the end。 It was very much a tell, rather than show。TW: (view spoiler)[Sexual assault (past, described semi-graphically), grooming, pedophilia (14 y/o, 18 y/o)(view spoiler)[ (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I was definitely not expecting to like this book as much as I did。 I picked it up off the Barnes & Noble Pride Reads table, because I like science fiction and I’m gay。 But after 10 pages, I was hooked。 This book felt like several episodes of Star Trek combined with your favorite queer romance novel, and a sprinkle of the Truman Show on top。 Positives: The little details that clue you in to the big reveal are wonderful。 The writing here was genius, and shined again and again。 Time-loops aren’t ea I was definitely not expecting to like this book as much as I did。 I picked it up off the Barnes & Noble Pride Reads table, because I like science fiction and I’m gay。 But after 10 pages, I was hooked。 This book felt like several episodes of Star Trek combined with your favorite queer romance novel, and a sprinkle of the Truman Show on top。 Positives: The little details that clue you in to the big reveal are wonderful。 The writing here was genius, and shined again and again。 Time-loops aren’t easy to write, but SDH managed it beautiful。 I think the overall plot was very gripping and kept you guessing, and I wasn’t mad when he set up the possibility for a sequel。 These characters work so well together, I’d love to see them in any scenario。 I was very pleasantly surprised to hear the topic of the ‘bury your gays’ trope brought up in a novel like this。 It was a very obviously call out to major TV productions and movie studios, and I am here for it。 DJ and Noa’s chemistry is very magnetic, two complete opposite personalities that are connected at only two points: how much they love each other, and how godforsaken stubborn they are。 Negatives: Noa is one of the most difficult narrators I’ve encountered since the Hunger Games。 While I understand protagonists can have faults, there were times in the first half of the novel I was actively routing for Jenny to push him out of the airlock。 Speaking of Jenny, I wish her sexuality wasn’t reduced to a throwaway line about her making out with a girl。 As someone who identifies as bisexual, it is continuously frustrating to find characters that will do anything but say the word。 It’s even more disappointing when it’s in a novel that contains such complex and beautiful LGBTQ+ characters。 On the topic of pacing, I think that we spend so much time with Noa in his Depression Cave at the beginning of the novel that the end started to feel very fast paced and rushed。 。。。more

I was annoyed by a lot of things in this book, particularly the main character, but everything was explained in the end, which upped my rating。

I think I would give this 3。5 stars。 I liked the characters, I was definitely in shock thanks to the ending that I did not see coming。 But that was what made it funny and fascinating。 I remember as well that I wrote in the first few pages "shoot Jenny" but later she was a great addition to Noa and DJ。 So this story is set in space but there is not much Science-Fiction stuff going on。 Which for me is great cuz I am very-very picky with my sci-fi love。 I don't like it often (How did I watch Doctor I think I would give this 3。5 stars。 I liked the characters, I was definitely in shock thanks to the ending that I did not see coming。 But that was what made it funny and fascinating。 I remember as well that I wrote in the first few pages "shoot Jenny" but later she was a great addition to Noa and DJ。 So this story is set in space but there is not much Science-Fiction stuff going on。 Which for me is great cuz I am very-very picky with my sci-fi love。 I don't like it often (How did I watch Doctor Who is still a miracle but I like that)。 But I think you could mostly say it's about the characters and the mystery of how they ended up in a space ship。 Surely there are monsters and other space stations, planets, or something along those lines but that was not the focus of it at all。 If anything there was more focus on Murder your Darlings than anything else。 (in a good sense)。 I think I could relate to Noa a lot or at least in the beginning ;) Now I am not sure if I would not shower and watch tv all the time but definitely would hang out in the recroom and be like and than go bake and cook every recipe that I know by heart。 If I ever get zapped to a space station or space ship, can someone please either give me internet or bring my cooking notes with me? Please and thank you。 DJ was really mysterious to me, like why he wanted to stay with Noa all the time but that's what gave that sappy (not too dramatic) love complex that I did not mind at all。 And Jenny was just simply funny and smart。 I also liked that the story did not go too much into details that were not necessary。 This was the story and this was what happened on the ship and in the end there was a sort of explanation。 It was fine for me。 。。。more

Such a strange book。 With many poignant moments。 Like when the author points out that queer characters are often secondary characters who we don’t learn about with any kind of dimensionality, whose purpose is just to serve the main (heterosexual) character’s story and development。 Or how I felt called out (in the best way) as a reader for only being interested in cute boys kissing。 This author’s books are hit or miss for me。 This one was a moderate hit and these messages really resonated with me Such a strange book。 With many poignant moments。 Like when the author points out that queer characters are often secondary characters who we don’t learn about with any kind of dimensionality, whose purpose is just to serve the main (heterosexual) character’s story and development。 Or how I felt called out (in the best way) as a reader for only being interested in cute boys kissing。 This author’s books are hit or miss for me。 This one was a moderate hit and these messages really resonated with me。 。。。more

This is probably just not for me。It was interesting and keeps me guessing, but after the first half of the book I just become indifferent about the rest of the story and wish for it to be done already。I like DJ but I'm not sure about Noa, he's okay and then he's annoying and then he's okay again and annoying again and I just can't stand him sometimes。 Jenny though。。I wish there were more about her。 This is probably just not for me。It was interesting and keeps me guessing, but after the first half of the book I just become indifferent about the rest of the story and wish for it to be done already。I like DJ but I'm not sure about Noa, he's okay and then he's annoying and then he's okay again and annoying again and I just can't stand him sometimes。 Jenny though。。I wish there were more about her。 。。。more

I am currently sitting on the floor of my bedroom with my jaw on the floor。 I have finished the book, but I want to pick it right back up and read it again, and I think it might be one of my top reads of the year。Noa wakes up in space。 His last memory is of a particularly bad day on Earth, but he has no clue why he's here。 Jenny and DJ, two other teens from different lives, are also stuck on the tiny ship, but nothing is what it seems, and that makes falling in love even more difficult。 First of I am currently sitting on the floor of my bedroom with my jaw on the floor。 I have finished the book, but I want to pick it right back up and read it again, and I think it might be one of my top reads of the year。Noa wakes up in space。 His last memory is of a particularly bad day on Earth, but he has no clue why he's here。 Jenny and DJ, two other teens from different lives, are also stuck on the tiny ship, but nothing is what it seems, and that makes falling in love even more difficult。 First off, this book is very accurately named。 It's a romance, but also there is so much going on in this book, and I can confidently say that most people won't be able to predict a lot of what happens in this book。 The blend between a scifi, a romance, and a mystery feels so effortless。 The book is paced so well that I simply looked down a bit after I had started to find I was nearly 300 pages in without knowing it。 Also shoutout to the author/publisher for the trigger warning at the beginning of the book。 <3All of the characters are very well fleshed out, especially given the fact that one of the main points of the book is that they end up on the ship without the memory of how they got there。 For a while, I had so many questions about all the characters, and I was unsure how I felt, but by the end I was 100% obsessed with all of them。This is a great book for someone who likes a good cheesy romance, but also wants SO much more to the story。 Its happy, its sad, it had me desperate to learn more, and the ending is just *chefs kiss*Hutchinson makes great use of a few of my favorite tropes, including but not limited to, hurt/comfort, forced proximity, and a dash of life saving and sacrifice for extra spice。 I will say that, while I loved the ending, I might act actually implode if I don't get a sequel。 Also, if the author by any chance reads this, I would (possibly) sell my soul for an ARC of book two- pleaseeee let book two be a thing。Anyways, this book was right up my alley。 The plot was stellar, the characters were great, and the romance made me feel so happy and so incredibly single at the same time。 I HIGHLY recommend reading this book, and below are some quotes to help convince you。"I had been born with a broken heart, and Billy had shattered the pieces into tiny fragments, but DJ seemed determined to put it back together。""Our story never ends; our story is always just beginning。"I made you a promise to never leave you, and I kept it。 I won't apologize for that。" 。。。more

Really 2。5 stars。 Barf to quote one of the characters, Jenny。 I don't know if it was the audiobook or the book content, but I really really dislike the whiny petulant main character。 I didn't like DJ the secondary character either - such a pushover。 The story had twists which I pretty much figured out from the beginning。 It was okay I guess。 There has been so much really good ya recently that this is a disappointment。 Really 2。5 stars。 Barf to quote one of the characters, Jenny。 I don't know if it was the audiobook or the book content, but I really really dislike the whiny petulant main character。 I didn't like DJ the secondary character either - such a pushover。 The story had twists which I pretty much figured out from the beginning。 It was okay I guess。 There has been so much really good ya recently that this is a disappointment。 。。。more

The world building wasn't all there, and even though the reveal explained previous parts that felt flimsy and ridiculous, I still wasn't sold on all the details of their universe。 The love story itself was okay -- I didn't see any of the redeeming qualities about Noa that DJ saw, and was confused at why DJ was so infatuated with him so quickly (again, that was explained by the reveal, but it still wasn't enough to make me invested in the lead up)。 The story was gripping though, and the pacing wo The world building wasn't all there, and even though the reveal explained previous parts that felt flimsy and ridiculous, I still wasn't sold on all the details of their universe。 The love story itself was okay -- I didn't see any of the redeeming qualities about Noa that DJ saw, and was confused at why DJ was so infatuated with him so quickly (again, that was explained by the reveal, but it still wasn't enough to make me invested in the lead up)。 The story was gripping though, and the pacing worked well, even though it seemed like the author was just making up rules and solutions as he went along。 I also really liked Jenny, and some of the more tender and deep moments were well done。 。。。more
